Facility to Provide Life-long Learning Opportunities for Families in Selkirk, St. Andrews and St. Clements: Selinger
SELKIRK—A new regional library will provide services for families in Selkirk as well as the rural municipalities of St. Clements and St. Andrews, Premier Greg Selinger announced here today. The province is providing an additional $1 million to support construction of the first phase of the new Red River North Regional Library in the city of Selkirk.
“Libraries offer families a place to come together to find information and share experiences,” said Selinger. “I’m pleased to support this project, which will provide library services for the growing population in the region.”
The provincial funding will be used to support the first phase of construction, which includes the building of 17,000 square feet of library space and a multi-purpose area. The estimated total cost of this phase of the project is $5 million, the premier said.
“This exciting expansion is part of a long-held vision to provide the entire region with better access to knowledge and information,” said Selkirk Mayor Larry Johannson. “It’s also a testament to the strong relationships between the province, my council and my fellow community leaders, Mayor Strang and Reeve Forfar, to ensure quality services for the people in this area.”
“Our library has always been more then books; it is a place for our community to connect to information and to each other,” said Colleen Sklar, board chair of the Red River North Regional Library. “Being able to start this new building means we have the opportunity to create a vibrant community commons, allowing for greater access to knowledge resources and to new and innovative programming opportunities for all community members.”
The province had previously committed $600,000 to support the project, as well as providing approximately two acres of land for its construction. The premier noted that as a result of the province’s contributions, a private donor has also come on board to help make this long-held vision a reality.
Provincial funding will come from the Municipal Recreation Fund component of the Building Manitoba Fund, Selinger said. The Municipal Recreation Fund provides funding support to municipalities outside of Winnipeg to undertake projects that include construction or enhancements to municipal recreation facilities such as recreation centres, community halls, parks, libraries, arenas and pools.
