Thank you Winnipeg!
The Winnipeg Chapter Contributes $6,000 to UNIFEM Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women

Take Action: End Violence Against Women was the 6th Local to Global event held by the Winnipeg Chapter of the Canadian Committee for UNIFEM on March 23rd, 2010 at the Norwood Hotel. We are delighted to announce that $6,000 has been raised for the UNIFEM Trust Fund. This is the most successful fund raising event we have held!

Two hundred and twenty-five people attended and enjoyed the wonderful refreshments including bannock and blueberry jam (purchased from Neechi Foods). Cheryl McKenzie (APTN) was the emcee, and welcomed Flo Ruck who did the opening prayer, and the Blue Sky Youth Drumming Group who performed the Honour Song.

Jeannette Corberie-Lavell, President of the Native Women's Association gave an inspiring talk about the lives of Aboriginal women, and the work of the Native Women’s Association of Canada and the Missing and Murdered Women. She spoke passionately about her experience with other Indigenous women, and how important it is for us to support the Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women. She received a standing ovation.

After a short break, the audience enjoyed a musical performance by Nikki Kimaksiutiksak and a group of young women and girls doing Throat Singing. They were followed by Troy Westwood Little-Hawk who sang three songs, including the haunting “Silent No More”. After the raffle draw, the Blue Sky Youth Drumming Group closed the evening, and the crowd gave a warm round of applause for all who gave so much of themselves that evening.
