Sam Boakye, a freshman at Ohio University, who is the only Black among whites on the floor of his dormitory and who shares a room with a white mate said he had something to prove. He wanted to erase racial stereotype by challenging himself to get the best grades. Studies show that interracial roommates is a good thing for breaking down barriers and creating understanding between people of diverse backgrounds.
Racism, ethnocentrism and all the other isms are barriers to race relations but race is a stubborn barrier to knock down because we have been fed so much lies by the scientists, our parents, our churches and all the institutions of the past that have left us with a meme (a disease of the mind) that we have to find the right antidote to erase. Maybe encouraging our children to share rooms with other races may help to do just that.
