HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN CANADA: TOWARD A NATIONAL PLAN – BOOTH UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COMMUNITY FORUM 2012
You are invited to participate in the third annual Booth University College Service Learning Forum. This year, we are bringing together key voices in Winnipeg to discuss human trafficking. There are so many myths surrounding this complex issue. Many people are unaware that trafficking is occurring right here in Winnipeg, sometimes right under our noses...but do we recognize it when we see it?
Why do we need a forum?
Advocates involved in addressing human trafficking have told us that Canada needs to develop a national strategic plan. At the forum, we bring people together who come from different perspectives to speak to one another at the same table. People who emphasize mercy, call for increased attention to the victims through greater social service provision and safe houses. People who emphasize justice want a national plan modelled after various other approaches that involve discussion about possible combinations of legalization/decriminalization/criminalization of the buyers/sellers, depending upon which model is being proposed. People who emphasize hope often talk about what is realistically feasible, emphasizing the importance of enforcing the laws we already have in place. Although there have been several recent events in Winnipeg that draw attention to trafficking so that Canadians might learn to recognize what might be going on right in their community, the forum provides a somewhat smaller venue for discussing the merits of diverse strategies for a national plan. The forum this year brings together representatives from a diverse set of perspectives to facilitate thoughtful discussion around this topic.
The forums are free. We are providing snacks and a light lunch. Our guest speakers for the community forum are:
Joy Smith, Member of Parliament for Kildonan-St Paul
Dianna Bussey, Social Services Consultant-Human Trafficking, The Salvation Army Canada and Bermuda Territory
Kathleen Shellrude, Outreach Worker/Case manager, Sage House
Chief Donavan Fontaine, Sagkeeng First Nation
Winnipeg Police Service
Moderator: David Northcott, Winnipeg Harvest
To register, send your name to Sherrie_Steiner@BoothUC.ca We hope you will be part of the community discussion.
