INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2012 CELEBRATES THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Family Services and Labour Minister Jennifer Howard, minister responsible for the status of women, joined guests at the Legislative Building today to recognize International Women’s Day 2012 with a special reception honouring women in business.
“This year’s International Women’s Day celebrates women in businesses who are improving the lives of women and their families by mentoring others and ensuring future opportunities,” said Howard.  “Today we recognize the entrepreneurs, business professionals, opportunity seekers, work-at-home moms and women re-entering the workforce who are a rising economic forcein our province.”
The event’s guest speaker was Sandra Altner, CEO of the Women’s Enterprise Centre of Manitoba (WEC), a one-stop access point for women entrepreneurs in Manitoba requiring information, funding and support.
Seven women behind some of Manitoba’s most successful companies were honoured at the event.  Cynthia Brick, Celeste Brunel, Polly Craik, Christine Dubyts, Elba Haid, Brenda LaRose and Pat Turner were each recognized individually for their contributions.
“By acknowledging the achievements of successful women today, we hope to inspire the women of tomorrow,” said Howard.
The women are also profiled in the Women Helping Women in Business publication, produced in partnership with the WEC.  Copies of the publication are available from the Manitoba Status of Women Division by phone at 204-945-6281 or 1-800-263-0234 (toll-free), by email at msw@gov.mb.ca or online at www.gov.mb.ca/msw/publications.
Each year on March 8, International Women’s Day marks women’s efforts over the years to attain justice and equality for themselves, their families and their networks, Howard said, adding it is a time for women around the world to commemorate their struggles and celebrate their achievements.
