STANDING HEARING SET FOR INQUEST INTO DEATH OF DRIANNA ROSS

A hearing date has been set to determine who can participate at the upcoming inquest into the death of Drianna Ross, aged two months, of God’s Lake Narrows.
On Nov. 22, 2011, Drianna was taken to the nursing station in God’s Lake by her mother at 11:35 a.m. because she felt the child was “burning up.”  A nurse assessed her, found her temperature to be 37.3 C and noted that she could go home.  The nurse gave her mother the option of administering Tylenol if she felt Drianna did not improve, but was told to check with the nurse again before giving any medicine.  Her mother was also told to bring Drianna back to the nursing station if she developed diarrhea, began vomiting or was “burning up” again.
Drianna’s parents contacted the nursing station a number of times between Nov. 22 and 25 with concerns that her condition was worsening.  On Nov. 25, she was brought to the nursing station three times for assessment and arrangements were made to have her transferred by air ambulance to Thompson General Hospital where she was diagnosed with pneumonia.  Despite treatment, Drianna’s condition did not improve and she died at 12:38 p.m. on Nov. 26, 2011.
An autopsy confirmed Drianna’s death was the result of respiratory failure due to a severe necrotizing lower-respiratory tract infection due to methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sepsis.  The manner of death was natural.
Under the Fatality Inquiries Act, an inquest may be called to explore the circumstances and events leading to deaths to determine what, if anything, could be done to help prevent similar deaths from occurring in the future.
Before the inquest can begin, the judge will decide who can question and call witnesses by having standing at the inquest.  People who want to have standing should contact the Crown and attend the hearing set for:
10 a.m., Dec. 14
Courtroom 402, Law Courts complex
408 York Ave., Winnipeg
Dates for the actual inquest will be set following this hearing
