PROVINCE UNVEILS MONUMENT TO HONOUR MANITOBA'S MISSING, MURDERED ABORIGINAL WOMEN, GIRLS

Today, the Manitoba government unveiled a monument at The Forks in honour and recognition of missing or murdered Aboriginal women and girls in the province, Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Eric Robinson announced today.

“This is a very important day for families of Manitoba’s missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls as we unveil a monument in their honour and recognition,” said Minister Robinson.  “Manitoba continues to support families who have tragically and violently lost a loved one in a very tangible and symbolic way with the installation of this monument and we continue our community partnerships on this most critical issue.”

The monument aesthetically, symbolically and physically represents and honours Manitoba’s missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls, the minister noted.

“Many families have no place to honour, grieve or celebrate their loved one. This monument offers such a space to families and community seeking to honour Aboriginal women and girls who were sadly taken from their families,” Minister Robinson said.

“Ka Ni Kanichihk is proud to partner with the Government of Manitoba on the development of this monument which stands as a testament to the need and benefit of community engagement and government partnership,” said Leslie Spillett, executive director, Ka Ni Kanichihk.

Labour and Immigration Minister Jennifer Howard, minister responsible for the status of women, invites all Manitobans to attend the Sunrise Memorial to commemorate Canada’s Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women at the Legislative Building tomorrow at 8 a.m.
This year marks the 22^nd anniversary of the tragic day when 14 young women who were engineering students at École Polytechnique in Montreal were murdered because of their gender and career choice.
“On this day we also take time to remember all women who are murdered or experience violence by partners, family members and strangers throughout this country and recommit ourselves to take action against all forms of violence in our society,” said Howard.  “Sadly, more than 20 years after the tragic events in Montreal, violence against women continues to be a serious issue that impacts us all – women, men, children, neighbourhoods, workplaces and communities.  We must all work together on addressing the inequalities that are at the heart of all gender-based violence.”
This year’s program will include a presentation by guest speaker Francine Pelletier, an acclaimed journalist, who was working in Montreal at the time of the École Polytechnique murders.
“On this solemn anniversary, I want to reaffirm our government’s commitment to making Manitoba a place where all people can feel safe in their homes and in their communities,” said Howard.  “Our government is committed to promoting women’s equality and working to eliminate violence against women.  Each one of us has the power and responsibility to speak out against violence and to help create a province where people can build their futures in safe, supportive communities.”
Following the program, refreshments will be provided.  Guests are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy for children at the North Point Douglas Women’s Centre.  Financial contributions are also welcome.
Tomorrow, Howard will also attend the Manitoba Federation of Labour’s Memorial Luncheon where she will read a proclamation designating Dec. 6 a day of remembrance in the province of Manitoba, in recognition of all women who have died as a result of acts of violence.

Dear Community Members,

You are all invited to a Sober ride walk in memory of  Senhit Mehari and Amutha Subramaniam whose lives were claimed in an horrific accident caused by a drunk driver last year on October 31st, 2010, at the intersection of Bishop Grandin and St. Mary's Road.

The sober ride walk will take place on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 30TH 2011, from 4:30pm prompt, at the corner of BISHOP GRANDIN & ST. MARY'S ROAD, St Vital.
