MANITOBA OLYMPIC, PARALYMPIC CURLING GOLD MEDALLISTS INDUCTED INTO ORDER OF THE BUFFALO HUNT

Premier Greg Selinger today inducted Manitoba 2014 Olympic and Paralympic curling gold medallists into the Order of the Buffalo Hunt.

Olympic champions Jennifer Jones,Kaitlyn Lawes, Jill Officer, Dawn McEwen, Kirsten Wall and their coach Janet Arnott, and Paralympic championDennis Thiessen were awarded the honour in a ceremony at the Legislative Building.

“We know that winning a gold medal at the Olympics is the result of countless hours of training, of early mornings and long days on the road,” said Premier Selinger.  “The achievement of these athletes is an inspiration to all the young athletes and their families who are now making those sacrifices in order to one day realize their Olympic dreams.”

The Jones rink won the Olympic gold medal in women’s curling with a 6-3 victory over Team Sweden while Thiessen won gold as part of Team Canada in an 8-3 victory over Russia in the Paralympic mixed curling final.

“We are immensely proud of our athletes and all that they have accomplished,” said Tourism, Culture, Heritage, Sport and Consumer Protection Minister Ron Lemieux.  “Bringing home these gold medals shows that Manitoba is a force to be reckoned with in curling.”

Manitoba’s Order of the Buffalo Hunt was established in 1957.  The honour is bestowed by the province on individuals who demonstrate outstanding skills in the areas of leadership, service and community commitment.

LITERACY AWARD TO RECOGNIZE EXCEPTIONAL ADULT LEARNERS: PREMIER

Premier Greg Selinger is inviting Manitobans to nominate deserving adult learners for the 2013 Council of the Federation Literacy Award recognizing outstanding achievement in adult literacy.
“Lifelong learning is the key to employment for economic success and full participation in society; lack of basic literacy skills can be problematic,” said Selinger.  “I commend all Manitobans who have chosen to improve their literacy skills and I am very happy to recognize their achievements.”
In July 2004, Canada’s premiers agreed to create an award paying tribute to individuals and organizations involved in the field of literacy across the country.  Thirteen medallions and award certificates are awarded each year, one in each province and territory, to acknowledge achievement in literacy skills, innovative practices and exemplary programming.
To be eligible, the nominee must:

• be an adult literacy learner residing in Manitoba who has been actively involved in literacy/essential skills programming within the past 18 months;
• have made significant progress in his or her learning; and
• have assisted others with learning and/or impacted others in the literacy community.

An independent selection committee in each province and territory reviews the nominations and selects the award recipient for that province or territory.  All nominations must be postmarked before May 31.
The recipient for each province and territory will be announced by the Council of the Federation in September.  In addition to the medallion and certificate, recipients receive a cheque for $300.

BIZPAL WINS AWARD FOR INNOVATION

PROVINCE ANNOUNCES SUCCESSFUL BIZPAL INITIATIVE WINS TECHNOLOGY AWARD

Innovative Online Service Expanded to Better Help Entrepreneurs Move Forward, Create Businesses, Jobs: Bjornson

The national BizPaL program has won a prestigious award at the Government Technology Exhibition and Conference (GTEC) in Ottawa after recently adding information on business growth, expansion and renewal, and the launch of an all-new technology platform and website, Entrepreneurship, Training and Trade Minister Peter Bjornson announced today.
“I am thrilled that BizPaL has been recognized for its innovation in reducing red tape for businesses,” said Bjornson.  “With 68 local governments participating in or joining the BizPaL Manitoba program, more than three-quarters of our population will have quick and easy access to this leading-edge online service that now covers more than 800 types of businesses.”
The minister noted that 12 new Manitoba municipalities are joining the BizPaL program.  The new municipalities, which will be officially launched in the months to come, include the rural municipalities of Alexander, Portage la Prairie, Shell River, Woodlands, Ellice, Minto and Odanah, the towns of Powerview-Pine Falls, Deloraine, Minnedosa and St-Lazare, and the city of Flin Flon.
Manitoba has also launched an all-new, redesigned website providing an enhanced client experience, Bjornson said, adding entrepreneurs are now able to find the permits and licences they need more quickly and easily across a wider variety of business activities.
In addition to be being part of the GTEC awards ceremony for BizPaL, Manitoba is being prominently presented as the showcase province at the GTEC conference.  Several Manitoba-based companies are also participating at the exhibition and conference.
BizPaL is an innovative, online service that provides entrepreneurs with simplified access to information on the permits, licences, approvals, certificates, registrations and other requirements they need to establish and run their business in Manitoba.  This web-based service is free to use and provides easy access to integrated information from Canada, Manitoba and participating local governments.

Toronto, November 12, 2009: The Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) is accepting nominations for its Award of Excellence (AoE) from public, private and non-governmental organizations, agencies and individuals who have demonstrated excellence and innovation in combating racism and discrimination. This AoE has six categories: Aboriginal, Education, Community, Corporate, Government/ Public Sector and Youth. Submissions for all categories are to be received no later than December 15, 2009.
The Award of Excellence program was created to recognize best practices in antiracism by institutions and individuals and is presented every two years. Adjudicated by an independent group of well-respected antiracism and human rights activists, the 2009 presentation will be made at the CRRF conference “Is there a New Paradigm for Understanding, Unlearning & Addressing Bias in Society” in Montreal, Quebec, May 17-19, 2010. Past winners include Carrefour BLE (Quebec), Darren Lund (University of Calgary), AMSSA ( Vancouver), Canadian Pacific, and Media Awareness Network.



"The Award of Excellence symbolizes national recognition of commitment and success in combating racism,” said Dr. Ayman Al-Yassini, the CRRF’s Executive Director. “Over the years, Canadian institutions—federal and provincial, government, NGO, private sector, and individuals—have communicated the message that racism is not acceptable in our society. The AoE provides the opportunity to share the best practices of those who demonstrated leadership in eliminating racism and racial discrimination.”

Toronto, le 12 novembre 2009 : La Fondation canadienne des relations raciales (FCRR) invite les organismes publics, privés et non gouvernementaux, et les particuliers ayant fait preuve d’innovation et d’excellence dans la lutte contre le racisme et la discrimination raciale à lui soumettre leur candidature à son Prix d’excellence. Ce Prix est décerné dans les six catégories suivantes : engagement autochtone, éducation, engagement communautaire, secteur privé, secteur gouvernemental ou public, et jeunesse. La date limite de dépôt des candidatures est le 15 décembre 2009.

Le Prix d’excellence de la FCRR, décerné tous les deux ans, a été créé pour reconnaître la mise en œuvre, par des organismes et des particuliers, de pratiques modèles en matière de lutte contre le racisme au Canada. Comme par le passé, les lauréats de 2009 seront sélectionnés par un groupe indépendant de défenseurs reconnus des droits de la personne et militants de la lutte contre le racisme. Leur nom sera annoncé au Colloque de la FCRR, organisé à Montréal (Québec) du 17 au 19 mai 2010 sur le thème « Existe-t-il dans notre société un nouveau paradigme pour comprendre et désapprendre les préjugés et y faire face? » Au nombre des anciens lauréats du Prix d’excellence, mentionnons Carrefour BLE (Québec), Darren Lund (université de Calgary), AMSSA (Vancouver), Canadien Pacifique, et le Réseau Éducation-Médias.

2009 LEAF VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION AWARDS

LEAF Lifetime Recognition Award recipient Betty Hopkins



LEAF congratulates this year's recipient of the Eloise Spitzer LEAF Lifetime Recognition Award, Betty Hopkins.

Manitoba-born Betty Hopkins has been a volunteer with LEAF for close to twenty years. Betty began her involvement with LEAF in 1990, and has been active at both the national and provincial Board levels.

As the chair of LEAF Winnipeg-Manitoba, Betty has literally devoted all of her time to LEAF. She is the heart, soul and brain of the organization. In her volunteer capacity, Betty acts as a full-time program developer/coordinator and administrator while ensuring that the branch's governance responsibilities are met. Betty's management philosophy has always been non-hierarchical, consultative, collaborative, collegial and consensus building. Not a day goes by that Betty is not answering phone calls, photocopying, educating, organizing or raising funds for LEAF. At the annual Persons Day breakfast in Winnipeg, Betty personally sells more than half of the thousand tickets sold each year.
