NEW MANITOBANS, BUSINESSES TO BENEFIT FROM EXPANDED IMMIGRATION JOB-MATCHING SERVICES UNDER ONE ROOF

Manitoba Start Officially Opens Doors with New Resources to Help Businesses Connect with Qualified Workers to Meet Staffing Needs: Premier
Manitoba Start has officially opened the doors to its new location in the historic Avenue Building in downtown Winnipeg, Premier Greg Selinger announced today.
“I’m extremely pleased that this innovative immigration program has consolidated its services into one highly visible and accessible location,” said Selinger.  “By connecting business leaders with skilled newcomers who can meet their staffing needs, Manitoba Start is supporting our provincial job market and economy.”
Manitoba Start has been helping new immigrants settling in Winnipeg since 2010.  The program provides information and referrals to orientation, settlement and language services, as well as employment readiness services.
Employment specialists at Manitoba Start also help Manitoba employers, companies and businesses find experienced and qualified employees through job-matching services.  Today, the service hub officially launched a direct phone line for employers looking to fill labour shortages.
“With the launch of 204-942-JOBS, we can help to meet the shared needs of immigrants and employers,” said Fatima Soares, executive director, Manitoba Start.  “We will work with employers to identify qualified individuals from our pool of workers who meet their specific job requirements.”
At today’s opening, the premier also met with several Chinese immigrants who participated in a 2010 pre-arrival pilot program in China to help them prepare for their arrival in the province.
“During my last mission to China, I was introduced to a number of people destined for Manitoba who were getting help with employment and settlement planning through pre-arrival services,” said Selinger.  “With the additional assistance of Manitoba Start upon arrival, this group is now fully participating in Manitoba’s economy.”
Pre-arrival services include orientation and labour market preparation services, the development of an integration and career plan, Manitoba specific information on the labour market and guidance on qualifications recognition procedures.
In 2011, Manitoba welcomed 15,962 immigrants, the highest level since the start of modern record keeping in 1946.
